Swindon Carriage Works is a Grade II listed pair of Victorian industrial buildings, central to the town’s railway heritage and historic association with the Great Western Railway. Appointed by Swindon Borough Council in 2020, BBA supported the regeneration of this significant heritage asset, delivering a sensitive refurbishment and adaptive re-use to provide flexible office accommodation for small creative businesses.
BBA developed a conservation-led masterplan that balanced the preservation of the building’s open industrial character with the need for commercially viable, contemporary workspace. Our role included master planning for future phases, planning and listed building applications, and detailed design, including bespoke, reversible mezzanine structures and the rebuilding of historic Jack Arch ceilings.
Sustainability was integral to the project, with the retention, re-use and sensitive adaption of the existing structure along with careful upgrades to the building fabric, services and roof glazing forming part of a holistic approach that considered environmental, social and economic factors. The result is a revitalised heritage asset, re-established as a key contributor to Swindon’s creative and economic future.
