Transformation of a derelict Grade II listed Hotel for the YMCA.

This unique project on a prominent site in Highbridge provides the YMCA with a new build facility with living accommodation, sports hall, café and community facilities. The building won the 2020 Somerset Building Control Partnership Building Excellence Awards.

The original structure was a 18th century Hotel, however, it was catastrophically damaged by two fires and because of these events listed building consent for demolition was sought. The consent hinged on the requirement of the new building’s façade to be rebuilt to reinstate the historic elevation. The design proposed incorporated a contemporary approach to the remainder of the development, with a glazed link and trespa rainscreen cladding. The ground floors are designed for Community use including a sports hall, changing rooms, café and meeting rooms. The upper floors provide 23 bedrooms with communal kitchen and bathroom facilities, for disadvantaged young people from the South West.

The project team included John Perkins Construction, Smith Consult and Brunel Design Partnership.
